Dear Sirs,

For the attention of Mr. West.

We have just received a requisition from you for three 6-BGD11-SC batteries off contract No. 61516 recently placed with us. As you are aware, the moulds for the ebonite container and cover are not expected to be ready for production before June, and in the circumstances, as you are presumably requiring these three batteries for test purposes, it will be necessary for us to supply in composition containers made by Lucas.

As you know, there is a tendency for these to crack when being filled with acid for the first charge, owing to the rapid temperature rise. Whilst these cracks, provided they are not too open, are not very detrimental, we should like to suggest that you try filling into each cell half of the acid only at first, and then putting in the remainder after a lapse of three hours. By doing this the temperature rise is restricted, and we think that you will not then have the cracking trouble.

It is also an advantage if the batteries are left in a warm place for at least 12 hours before filling, so as to limit the difference in temperature to as small a figure as possible.
