1379 To. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GR.{George Ratcliffe} Levallois. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GR.{George Ratcliffe}2/JAB.19.1.39. DAILY REPORT. Paulin Bentley II - B-27-LE. Car brought back to Depot last night and cylinder head removed for cursory inspection on arrival. N° I piston with broken crown and top half including scraper ring still in bore of cylinder. Skirt and rod completely adrift off crankshaft and lodged in the sump. No sign of seizure in bore of cylinder, block broken away at base. N° I journal of crankshaft badly scored. Lubrication appears ample in cylinder bores. Top and bottom half of crankcase damaged. Web cracked in top half, bottom half may be repaired. Particles of aluminium in all cylinders with fairly large piece in N° 6. Cylinder head apparently not damaged, both valves in N° I marked slightly but nothing serious. Rod found bent in sump with cap and bolts sheared off. Engine removed from chassis for strip inspection. All bearings and rods had tightened up. All top rings of pistons except one were tight in their lands. A second piston found to be cracked across the 1st and 2nd lands.
