| X240 27.11.34. Air speeds in front of Bentley Radiator. The air speeds at different points in front of a Bentley radiator have been measured by means of a small Pilot Tube used in conjunction with the gauge from an aircraft air-speed indictor. The car used was B-23-AE, equipped with radiator shutters. The indicator was first calibrated by fixing it at the end of a long stick projecting out of one of the car windows. The indicator readings were checked against car speeds during several up and down runs on a straight road which ran across the direction of the wind. During this and subsequent tests the true wind velocity was taken as the mean of the readings taken on up and down runs on this road. Fig. 1 shows some of the velocities recorded with the bonnet on, and Fig. 2 gives the corresponding figures with the bonnet off. At the position (2), behind the headlamp, a negative speed was recorded, amounting to about 20 m.p.h. at a car speed of 60 m.p.h. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/F.Ll.Smith: | ||
