Further to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}3/JH.28.4.37

No.5. Test Bed.

Ph.III.No.13.

Unit on test prior to being fitted in 32.EX. for 15,000 miles test.

Special non-standard parts include:-

(1) 4 port cylinder head with solid rockers, single EB.175 valve springs.
(2) Long toe camshaft LeC.5401.
(3) Modified alum. hot spot.

Tests to be carried out are as follows:-

(1) Running in and usual power curve with .012 Clearance.
(2) Slow running. Is the slow running as good as standard engine with hydraulic tappet gear when running at .012 or what clearance is it necessary to go up to, to get good idling.
(3) Is lubrication to the valve gear O.K. when oil hole in rockers at the push rod end is blanked and hole in rocker shaft on the valve side in order to reduce the amount of oil to the valve tips.
Check the oil pressure to the rockers.
Pressures required at 4000 R.P.M. temp. 100°C. inlet.
Main 30 lbs/sq.in. Rockers 4 - 5 lbs/sq.in.
(4) Check for valve bounce and rocker gear noise.
(5) Run one hour consumption at 4000 R.P.M. and repeat for being consistent.
