X. 3499 To B.J. c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} & Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} PN{Mr Northey}5/DN29.8.23. OVER HEATING OF ENGINES ON 40/50 HP. CHASSIS. X. 766 X. 3499 It would appear from the statements of Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} that where owners wish it, or are likely to be using their cars for mountain climbing, we could supply a radiator having a sufficiently larger capacity for radiation to prevent over-heating under the conditions under which Mr. Sidney and Mr. Atchley have been using their cars. There is no doubt, however, that one of the considerations which arises from taking this action would be a greater difficulty in maintaining a sufficiently high temperature under the average conditions in this country, unless some method be employed to control the radiation capacity of the radiator, such as blanking-plates, which are most in evidence, or radiator shutters operated by the hand or automatically operated. I am very keen on radiator shutters for the 40/50 HP chassis as early as possible and if we are not likely to standardise this fitting soon, I suggest that we approve and authorise the sale of such a fitting as that supplied by Paddon, or perhaps one of the American fittings, if the Tech. Dept. considers them better, which are hand-operated and very effective, in cases where a larger radiator is supplied by us. I think this is a matter about which action should be taken as early possible. P.N. | ||
