contd:- -2- We have also taken the dynamo off 6-Comhauk-11 and fitted it to 8-Comhauk-11 to replace the one with the burst commutator. The dynamo is not satisfactory but will probably carry on until the new brushes arrive. We also find that on both cars the bolts which held the under-shield side strip to the frame are all loose and many of them missing. The flexing of the frame evidently puts a lot of work on to these small bolts and it may be desirable to make them larger and fit larger diameter washers on them, or even to allow of some flexibility at this point. Since writing the above, the car has returned with the top plate of the off-side front spring broken in the forward half. We are working tonight fitting the spare one. Will you please send off a new top plate for the broken spring which is of Woodhead make. We think it wise also to send a spare generator. satisfactory or not, as we do not wish to feel we are proceed-ing with the manufacture of parts which are likely to be scrap. We are rather anxious to receive and to examine the burst commutator. This may mean serious alteration. We are also requesting EFC. to make special high speed tests of the generator to see whether such faults can be reproduced. This feature has already been brought to our attention by Mr. and is a matter for D.O. attention. We certainly have had considerable trouble in this direction even on the 40/50. The disadvantage of allowing movement to take place with these joints is the squeaking which occurs due to such movement as we have already experienced on the 40/50. We are sending off today new top plate as requested. These springs are the Woodhead make H-R design. We have suggested that we might to advantage, supply and fix to 6-Comhauk-11 a set of Woodhead springs of Woodhead design so as to make comparative tests. We are afraid we cannot do this at present as we have no spare generator, unless we take the one off 7-Comhauk-11. We can however convert an old armature so as to be suitable for fixing in the present type generator, but this will take some time. We suggest therefore that when 8-Comhauk-11 returns to the works, they should bring back the faulty generator which we could re-fix up with a new armature as above mentioned. The rattle which we thought had almost disappeared on lubricating This refers to the complaint we have on 6-Comhauk-11 and which contd:- | ||
