Mr. Hives, Chief Experimental Eng'r,
Rolls Royce Co., Ltd.,
Derby, England

My dear Mr. Hives:

I recently received a letter from Mr. Olley, written from Derby, regarding transmissions of the spool gear type. Since then I have talked this matter over with Mr. Olley here in Detroit, and as a result of this talk am arranging through Mr. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} W. Pearson, who is located in Detroit and represents a company owning the patents covering this construction, to see that you get all necessary information to enable your company to apply this type gear box to your cars.

This spool gear type box has a fairly wide commercial background through its use by the Chrysler Corporation who have used over fifty thousand to date. This fifty thousand is of the large size which has capacity of about 300 ft. lbs. This same transmission, at least the spool gear parts of it, with changes in material to bring up the physicals and a few detail changes, could be made to carry 350 ft. lbs., which I understand is the capacity of your large car.

In view of the satisfactory experience the Chrysler Corporation had with the large unit they have now added a smaller unit which has a capacity of 175 ft. lbs. This unit is now in production and they are producing about 200 a day. The experience Chrysler has had in the past year and a half with this type transmission has enabled them to produce a very good job at a low cost. The present factory cost of the small job on a production basis of 200 per day is thirty dollars.

Mr. Pearson is arranging to send you a complete transmission of the small type as now being produced with the exception that it will be equipped with Maybach synchronizing clutches with special type control to adapt these clutches to three and four speed transmissions. Mr. Pearson will write you fully about these clutches and their control later. Mr. Olley who has recently spent a day with Mr. Pearson and me here in Detroit, will probably also write you about them. He seemed quite interested to have you try this type of synchronizer. Complete sets of details and assemblies of transmissions above referred to will be sent you including special details of the modifications required to introduce synchronizers.
