SPRINGING FOR CONTINENTAL TOURING.

Referring to PN{Mr Northey}'s remarks handed on, incorporated in Whrl/FP.{F. Potts}20.1.27. it was fully appreciated at the works that the hydraulic shock damper is a distinct advantage in assisting to keep the car off the buffers, but it would be quite wrong to set a shock damper beyond a certain percentage damping effect on the spring, as the damper itself resolves in a direct punch between the frame and the axle.

As a matter of fact, I had already discussed with Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} the question of whether he considered it would be possible to fit lighter springs in Countries like Spain, Portugal, Poland, and Australia, in view of the hydraulic dampers being incorporated, but Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} was of the opinion that we could not make any step down in the manner suggested, at the moment. The whole matter was under consideration, and careful experiments would be made to finally decide whether some intermediate poundage would be more suitable than the 20% stiffer, but for the present Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} was very definite that he would not agree to making any change in view of the trouble that we have been constantly up against due to breaking of springs in the Countries mentioned, as a result of the extremely bad conditions under which the chassis had to be run.
