To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bowering. Re New S.U. Float Chamber for Bentley. We have received from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bowering a new S.U.float chamber for Bentley, which has been passed to us for criticism and which we send to you herewith. The points which we criticise are as follows:- 1. The float mechanism is not arranged to give zero side thrust as the needle seats. 2. The point of contact of the tongue is not on the centre point of the needle and it would appear to be difficult to ensure that both halves of the tongue are in contact at the same time. 3. The joint between the float chamber and the lid{A. J. Lidsey} is very poor. 4. The clearance between the float and float chamber seems to be on the small side. 5. The length of thread for the pivot screw seems to be on the short side. 6. Poor "control" of float on its pivots due to short bearing length. 7. It would not appear to be easy to ensure that the pressed in pivot would remain petrol tight. 8. The amount of lettering on the lid{A. J. Lidsey} seems rather excessive. 9. It would appear that a drilling might be saved by moving the boss for the petrol feed into line with the needle seat at the side of the float chamber. 10. The petrol supply drilling from the float chamber breaks in slightly below the float chamber bottom floor with the result that all the dirt which settles at the bottom of the float chamber will be drawn into the carburetter.
