Dear Mr. Hives:

RE ROAD SPRINGS - BIJUR LUBRICATION
Section 7020/ 30

We are immensely interested in your note Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/Feb. 1, that you are approaching a solution of spring lubrication from the one-shot system.

This is a problem which has worried us and which we have tried to solve not very thoroughly or conclusively, for several years.

We should be grateful if you could arrange to send us a print of N. Sch. 2787 No. 3.

We have tried:

Attempts to Lubricate Springs.
(1) Lubricating the springs through the center bolts from the Bijur system. This worked on cadmium plated springs without spring gaiters, except that we did not get the oil to the tips of the longest leaves.

We used No. 6 drip plugs, and in the light of further experience can see that we should have used special extra-large drip plugs, as the demand for oil in the road springs is probably quite large.

If gaiters had been used this system might have worked with No. 6 plugs. But at the time we (perhaps unwisely) tried to dispense with gaiters altogether.

(2) Lubricating the rear springs with drip-plugs in the filler plugs of the gaiters using a 3/16" perforated pipe down the back of each spring.
