Screw Gear for Drum Winding Carriage.

FL.514, the original of which is attached to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH's copy, shows the screw gear for the drum winding carriage. This consists of a double (i.e. right and left hand) threaded bar with the two threads joined by a connecting curve at each end.

The bar is driven by chain from the drum shaft, the ratio being such that the drum makes 81 turns for the full traverse of the slipper follower from one end to the other of the thread.
