Winch - Reduction Gear.

PL.776 the original of which is attahhed to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH's. copy shews the reduction gear between the engine and cable drum on the launching winch. Since there is some uncertainty as to the relative speeds and pulls which will prove most suitable for the purpose for which this winch will be required, we have provided three alternative gear ratios, the pinion, gear, and idler sizes being so arranged that the various gear centres are unaltered, whatever ratio is employed. The dimensions of the gear case are such that it will accommodate the largest gear required at any particular station. All three sets of gears should be detailed. In order to avoid the risk of gear distortion during case hardening, we have selected a material which is heat treated before machining and machined in the toughened state so that the necessity for grinding should be eliminated.
