X5310 We attach a blue print which shows the angle of splines which we have used successfully on existing gearboxes. It also shews the previous angle of splines which was not successful. The first 60° included angle gears and splines which we tested, we used in conjunction with the altered ratio of gears and the stiffer shaft. This shewed no tendency to work out, and it was for this reason that we have decided to try modifying existing gears to see whether they will stay in. We have had a case of the 5th. gearbox which we have tried with modified gears, on which the second speed worked out. It was examined and found that when the gear had been modified, the slotting had not been carried out very accurately. We changed this gear wheel and it overcame the trouble. Broaches have now been made for altering the gears and we should shortly be able to confirm whether they are going to be consistently free from trouble. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
