DAMAGED STARTER TOOTH RINGS ON FLYWHEELS.

Referring to Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/WT.15/MW.6.10.33. we entirely concur with the conclusions arrived at in your memo quoted above.

With regard to the .020" displacement of the tooth on the ring, this does not come into the calculation as the dimensions given in our arrangement drawings are from the tooth itself and not from the edge of the flywheel.

It is evident that the trouble is due to the fact that clearances have not been kept in accordance with drawing, and therefore there is no need, so far as the design is concerned, to make any modifications.

The sudden eruption of trouble did not coincide with anything which had been done from a design point of view, in fact the dimensions have been as they are at the moment for 2½ years, and this eruption is the first complaint which we have heard of.

We agree that the right method to combat the trouble is to draw up a Depot Sheet, which should include the production limits as given on your Sheet 3, and copies of blueprint showing the dimensions in question clearly. We would suggest that in making the sketches that it should be made clear that the dimension is to the edge of the tooth, under which circumstances there will be a covering allowance of .0625 after the tooth had engaged before the main current comes on, and this amount has proved in practice prior to this epidemic to be sufficient for the purpose.
