1.Contd. driven from the erecting to the Test Dept:
On dismantling it was found that the amount
of out of mesh of the gears coincided with the
amount of angle through which the change speed
lever had turned on its spindle.

2. The out of meshing as described in No.1. had
the effect of creating a bigger bending
moment on the reverse spindle, and therefore
causing a bigger angle of deflection.

3. Owing to the teeth not being fully in mesh
(they were something over .3 out), they would
be deflected to form an inclined plane which
might cause a slight creep out as the teeth
came into gear.

4. We had arranged the centre of tooth pressure
to be symmetrical about the splines under
them, and this would not be so with the teeth
partly out of mesh.

In order to get the experiment moving
quickly, the "large wheel" was one that had been slightly
damaged in a previous experiment, and this, in conjunction
with the increased unit pressure would probably cause
the bad bedding.

We are now re-assembling the box with a new
"large wheel" and reverse pinion, and which we expect
to be on test about Mid-day.

As far as the design of these pieces is
concerned, we propose to add some simple feature which
would indicate the position up to which the pinions
have to be screwed on to their sleeves in the box, after
the position has been first determined externally.
