INDIA - 4 SPEED GEAR BOX.

We wired R.{Sir Henry Royce} this afternoon as follows:-
"SECOND TEST ALL REQUIREMENTS FULFILLED BY
"TORSIONALLY FREE REVERSE SLIGHT SCORING ON TOOTH TIPS
"NOT CONSIDERED IMPORTANT FOR REASONS IN FULL WRITTEN
"REPORT FOLLOWING. HAVE RECOMMENDED PARTS FOR PRODUCTION".

The second test of the torsionally free reverse pinions sliding on splines asked for by R.{Sir Henry Royce} was made with full faced striking fork and without spring plungers, and during the test (which was made for half an hour at full torque) there was no tendency shown for the gear to work out.

On dismantling all parts looked in perfect order, with the exception of the tips of the small pinion teeth, which in some cases appeared slightly scored. This can perhaps be explained by the fact that, in order to rush this experiment through, the teeth were made with a cutter which was intended to be used when the teeth are ground. As the teeth were not ground, the cutter was just pushed further into the wheel, and the tooth contour may not have been perfect. As everything else appeared to be in order, and we have had these teeth take the load satisfactorily on previous occasions, this point is not
