To Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X4117 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rml/LG5.7.26. CHASSIS 79-LC - SCHMIDT'S TRIALS. X457 X4117 With reference to Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}/MacB/HW1.7.26 attached. We do not consider that the alterations made to this chassis will overcome Mr. Schmidt's trouble of high speed steering wobbles. We are surprised that this phenomenon occurs at speeds as low as 62 m.p.h. We suggest that Mr. Schmidt tries several changes of tyres on the front wheels and ascertains if the wobbles still persist. The simplest method of doing this is to change round the spare wheels and his rear wheels. We suggest that at the same time he should check the toe-in of his front wheels, he should also tighten up his present friction type shock absorbers. The only really definite cure for high speed wobbles of which we have any knowledge is the Rolls-Royce hydraulic damper fitting. These should completely overcome his trouble. With reference to the side steering tube springs. As Mr. Schmidt has our latest type .720 lead steering, the springs we recommend are 2000 lbs. and not 1500 lbs. These should act as a palliative to wobbles. We should like to add that high speed wobbles at 62 m.p.h. with high pressure tyres at 50 lbs/sq.in. and accurately balanced wheels are quite outside anything we have experienced.
