X4429 HS {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} - COPY OF LETTER RECEIVED FROM:- THOS. FIRTH & SONS, LIMITED, NORFOLK WORKS, SAVILLE STREET EAST, SHEFFIELD. Please Refer to SPRING DEPT. MF/WEW. Messrs Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Road, D E R B Y. 20th Dec., 1921. Dear Sirs, "GOSHAWK 11" - LAMINATED ROAD SPRINGS. We thank you for your letter ref. Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 1/NJ191221 of the 19th. inst., and beg to give you the following report of the position of your orders up to date. Our Order No. F.11. Three sets (top leaves only) in chrome vanadium. Three sets (top leaves only) in silico manganese. The three sets of the above in chrome vanadium are now practically ready for bending and hardening. We have only just received the bending dies, which required a little fitting, but we hope to have them ready for use by Thursday, in which case we expect to be able to deliver these three sets of top leaves by the end of the month. The three sets of top leaves in silico manganese have not yet been received from Messrs Firth-Derihon Stampings, Ltd., the delay, we understand, being caused by the fact that they have had to make slight alterations to their stamping dies after the first trial batch. These should, however, be to hand in a few days, when they will be pushed forward as quickly as possible. Our Order No. F.8. Three sets trial springs in chrome vanadium. Three sets trial springs in silico manganese. As regards the top leaves the same remarks apply as to our order No. F.11 above. The material for the remainder of the leaves is all ground and ready for grinding the taper. Of the ten cast iron bending dies required for these springs, only two have been received, a further two being expected by the end of the week, and the delivery of these sets will really depend upon the receipt of these dies, which are being hastened as much as possible. We very much regret this delay, but we consider it much better to try and get the tools and dies correct before attempting to complete your orders. (CONT'D) | ||
