1204? Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 3rd November, 1938. L. Pomeroy, Esq., Technical Editor, "The Motor", 5/17, Rosebery Avenue, E.C.1. Dear Mr. Pomeroy, Thank you for your letter of November 2nd. I think that E.R.A.'s have done extraordinarily well with the facilities at their disposal. I do believe, however, that money alone cannot eliminate the difference between Mercedes and Auto Union performance and that of E.R.A. In other words, to make such cars would require a technical staff with intimate knowledge of such products, and, from my own experience, such staff are not to be bought off a peg, but have to be acquired and trained over a considerable period of time. As an interesting job I can think of nothing better than producing a team of racing cars, but am exceedingly doubtful as to the commercial value of such a pastime. The three biggest and most successful producers of motor-cars in the world - General Motors, Chryslers and Ford - have, to my knowledge, never run a team of racing cars of any sort.
