Wraith Gear Box.

27.2.36. to cheapen the production of Gear Boxes would not be favourable.

The introduction of double cutting in opposition to grinding does not decrease the price of production due to the increase in the subsequent operations necessary.

In the event of adoption of double cutting, the final machining operations necessitate complicated chucking devices for each gear in production. The present method of final grinding the teeth off a final bore would have to be reversed and would offer considerably more complications in machining.

The introduction of Cyanide Hardening does not eliminate distortion due to hardening, also no steel is yet available from which to produce a gear having a good core after heating in a cyanide bath and quenching. The introduction of a second quenching in an effort to overcome core difficulties would tend to increase the distortion which would further complicate the adoption of such a method of production.
