Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/R TELE. EXT. NO. 3 DAGENHAM, ESSEX. 7th April 1938. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Robotham, Answering your letter of the 6th, I had our people together today on the question of Frame lengths and believe that there has been some confusion in giving you the information on the capacity of our presses. We naturally would not want you to spend your money on dies specially to suit our presses. On the other hand, as I see it, there will be no difficulty in producing the length of Frame you require with either our present presses or the new one which we have ordered. It is my understanding that your short Frame will be 178.6 ins., and the longer one 184.6, although I should like you to confirm that this is the correct figure for the maximum. The press on which we propose to run these Frames has a capacity of 190 and we have ordered a new press from America that will give us safely 192, but which by some re-arrangement of the dies can be increased still further if necessary. I do not think, therefore, that we will have any difficulty in giving you what you require, but should like you to confirm the minimum and maximum lengths according to your latest setup. Also, you might be interested to know that Mr. Tjaarda, our Experimental Engineer from Detroit, will be in England for a few weeks during the early part of May, and as he has a number of very interesting developments I should like very much to have him meet you and discuss some of these points which I know will be of mutual interest. With very kindest regards, I am, Yours sincerely, [Signature: N H Manning] P.S. Since dictating the above we have talked with the representative of the company supplying the new press, and provisions are now being made so that we can go up to a maximum of 220".
