PHANTOM 11 STEERING.

We have investigated one or two cases of Phantom 11 steering complaints and in consequence make the following recommendations :-

(1) WHEEL BALANCE. In every case the balance of the wheels should be carefully checked. It is not enough to assume that the wheels have been properly balanced at the Works because the coachbuilders' frequently remove the tyres and tubes for painting purposes and re-erect them, putting the balance weights on wherever they think fit. It is often mis-leading to try and check the balance of the wheel on its own hub, as the grease in the ball-race will frequently mask quite an appreciable out of balance. The coachbuilders' attention should always be called to any cases where wheel out of balance has been found to be due to their negligence.

(2) TYRE PRESSURE. The recommended tyre pressures are 40 lbs/sq.in. It is possible that a steering can be run with 35 lbs/sq.in. without trouble occurring, but at any pressure below this trouble is almost certain to occur.

(3) PIVOT LEAN. The backward pivot lean of the front axle should not exceed 2 3/4° (- 1/2°). If it is found to be more than this it should be rectified and brought within the limit. A Depot Sheet is being circulated dealing with
