To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} c. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. Hdy.{William Hardy} SEMI-FLOATING AXLES. With regard to the memo Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/HB.{C. E. Harcombe}27G.16.12.37 on this subject we have in addition calculated the major stresses for the Rover 12, Bentley 8 litre, and Oldsmobile. The figures are - Rear Axle Shear Stress Over- Weight. Top Gear. turning. Wraith 1.750 30.0 cwt. 6740 106,500 brg. with 1.5 overhang. Cadillac 60 23.5 10400 101,000 Rover 17 6000 79,000 Oldsmobile 21 8600 77,000 Bentley 39 7400 110,000 We have written to S.S. and Grahams to try and get more information about half Shaft failures. In the meantime we agree to the suggested 1.750 dia. shaft with 1.5 over-hang as very unlikely to give trouble. We do recommend that the axle gear oil seals should be in the centre box as we think that in that particular we are better than anyone else.
