HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} x7410. BY/EM2/J.17.12.29. PHANTOM II SPRINGING. -------------------- With respect to your note HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RL4/J.7.12.29., we have noted the complaint from Ps. with regard to springs of his Trials Car. We think that this trouble is due to the cause which was brought to our notice some three or four weeks back and which we have since eliminated, and that is that after cadmium plating the springs are immersed for half-an-hour in hot lanoline for two reasons namely:- (a) To remove any of the ill effects of the plating process. (b) To ensure that there is a slight film of lanoline all over the plates which will assist the cadmium in preventing corrosion whilst the springs are in store. Unfortunately in applying this process the Works had failed to remove the surplus lanoline which had accumulated in the oil ways. We have since taken steps to remedy this and we are assured now that no excess of lanoline is present anywhere on the springs to interfere with the lubrication of same. In addition to this we have now instructed the Works that when erecting a chassis they must also oil the springs and we think this should overcome all complaints in this connection. BY.{R.W.
