On many pressure services there are certain conjunctions of circumstances which give rise to pressures considerably in excess of the normal working ones. In such cases the usual practice has been to use a gauge with a scale for a much higher pressure than the normal, and the working range is thus very much cramped and frequently difficult to read. By using “Overload” Gauges, the working range may occupy the whole of the scale-space, and yet the gauge will always be ready to stand any excess pressure.

It may be that only very exceptional circumstances will give rise to abnormal pressures, yet this feature of being able to deal with any excess pressure which may arise, and therefore not “giving out” in the hour of need when the service is pressed, warrants the adoption of “Overload” Gauges in practically all instances.
