Phantom III Gearbox.

At a meeting of By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and Hdy.{William Hardy} to consider the position with regard to Phantom III gears coming out of mesh, it was agreed that the position was sufficiently serious to recommend an immediate modification on production.

With regard to the second speed gear, the Experimental Department have tested a modification to N.Sch.4824 embodying a universal ring coupling. This device broke under very strenuous testing, but has been slightly modified and re-tested with satisfactory results to a schedule which includes a full throttle dynamometer run of four times the length normally employed, and a large number of full throttle climbs on second gear.

In addition all the known ways of making this device fail to keep the gear in have been tried unsuccessfully, and this has been repeated on three different couplings.

It is possible to go on improving the design of this device from a strength point of view, but this might interfere with its operation, and would demand further testing. If the intermediate ring does break, as it did on the first model, the gearbox continues to work without the operator knowing it.

We, therefore, recommend that N.Sch.4824 with the improvements aforementioned should be put on production forthwith, and at the same time put on a 10,000 mile test in parallel.

With regard to the third speed gear, we have three modified couplings made to N.Sch. 4896 ready for trial, and it was agreed that if these prove effective in overcoming the trouble they would also be recommended as an immediate alteration on production.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
