1044 Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/R.23.6.39. Herewith three photographs of the 8-cylinder engine, together with a weight analysis summary of the various sections. The photograph of the complete engine is misleading in that it does not include the clutch pit or engine mounting, both of which are incorporated in the weight analysis. The clutch pit and engine mounting are, of course, not normally included in the dry weight of the engine, and on this particular unit these are worth 40 lbs. One other point, we have on this unit, relatively speaking, a heavy flywheel which would not be necessary on a marine unit. We should expect to reduce the weight of this item by 20 lbs without difficulty. The final dry weight of the engine, therefore, becomes 693 lbs, less:- (1) Engine mounting................ 21 lbs (2) Clutch pit & operating mechanism 20 lbs (3) Presumably lightening of flywheel 20 lbs --- 61 " or, dry weight of the engine for installation purposes 632 lbs. We attach an open exhaust horse-power curve of the engine, from which it will be seen that it develops 138 H.P. at 2,500 r.p.m. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
