Re. AMERICAN ALTERATIONS.

With reference to the various comments by R.{Sir Henry Royce} to the American alterations, i.e. R1/M21.9.23. (11 sheets); R2/M14.9.23; and R1/M17.9.23; the following are comments which you might consider in dealing with your experiments or recommendations :-

No. 3867A. Felt Washers in Steering Box.

We have had no experience of this complaint, our chief trouble is to overcome the oil leak through the control mechanism passing through the bottom of the steering box.
Some better method of tackling this job would be an improvement.

No. 1522. Cancelling Cut-out on Exhaust System.

In discussing this I understood R.{Sir Henry Royce} to mention this this might also be cancelled as a standard fitting on Derby chassis, and only fixed when specially ordered.

No. 2172. Brooch Hole in Float Chamber Cover. (Reference Springfield Print E.2769).

Could not the same scheme be recommended and applied by both parties ?

No. 2221.) Deletion of pressed Covers over Thrust
No. 2226.) Bearings Magneto and Governor Drive Pinions.

Our experience has been that these covers do hold dirt, and we might to advantage avoid using them. Inspection of those which have been run at Springfield shew them to be quite in good condition. At the same time Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} should confirm this by long tests.

No. 2231. Web to stiffen the base of float chamber during machining.

I do not know of any experience at Derby of these defects.

Contd.
