X354 To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}17/KW.4.12.35. Phantom III Valve Gear. Here is a report up to date of our work on the Ph.III valve gear. It is really to show you how we are going along, because we have not yet come to any definite conclusion. The object of cutting our plunger clearance down from 1 1/2 to 1 thou, is to reduce the valve noise at high speeds. We do not yet know whether it does this and are just about to make tests to find out. We do know that it makes our valve spring question more difficult, because it makes the valves bounce at a lower speed. Whilst we are trying valve noise experiments we shall go over the insulated rocker cover job again, to see if it is any good on the SpectreCodename for Phantom III. We may be suffering from our magnesium rocker covers. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Att: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}18/KW.4.12.35. | ||
