To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to E.J.J. x634 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/MJ.4.11.30. PHANTOM 11 & 20/25 HP. ENGINE ROUGHNESS, BODY BOOMING ETC. On both the 20 HP. and the 40/50, the engine roughness and body 'booming' stand out as being serious problems. You will see from our various reports that we are doing intensive work on both cars and W.W. cannot design any improvement until we give them the lead. These tests necessitate running the car with various portions of the power unit removed, at speeds up to 50 and 60 M.P.H. The only way we can do this at present is by towing the dismembered car on the road. This method of test is at any time undesirable and becomes increasingly so in the winter months. It has always been a difficulty. E.J.J. has a scheme in hand whereby we shall be able to do all these tests driving the engine through the road wheel drums in the Expl. dynamometer house. Half of the scheme, which necessitated a certain amount of alteration to the building, has been completed. The other half, which consists of fitting up a Phantom 11 engine and drive to the drums, has been waiting now for about six months owing to pressure of other work. We are told by Mr. Johnson that the job could be got through in about three weeks when circumstances permit. If this scheme could be completed it would help us considerably.
