X5310 TO. FROM AJS. SECRET. AJS1/148.2.25. copy to HH. MS. INDIA. 4 SPEED BOX. We send herewith Led. 1997. (original to HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}, and a print to R.{Sir Henry Royce}) which shows:- (1) Two methods of making the 1st. and 2nd. speed pinions torsionally free from one another, and with their driving keys symmetrical about the centre of tooth pressure. (2) The splined shaft on which the 1st. and 2nd. speed pinion (as designed at present) slides with the splines reduced slightly on their sides to prevent the keys in the pinions from bedding anywhere but on a ring of splines approximately symmetrical with the centre of tooth pressure. The above constitute experiments as asked for in H1/MS925., and we would call your attention in the case of (2) above to the necessity of having one end of the pinion sleeve entirely out of driving contact with any spline surface, while the other end is being driven, and vice versa. We suggest that the splines should be ground with the axis of grinding wheel at right angles to the face being operated upon. We will forward you further suggestions for carrying out experiments asked for by R.{Sir Henry Royce} AJS. | ||
