4 SPEED BOX.

(5310)
AJS/14.2.25.

Referring to your memo. of 9/2/25 dealing with further suggestions for the above we have up-to-date instructed the following:-

(1) Parallel stiffened reverse shaft with solid rear race.

(2) 1st. & 2nd. speed and reverse slider forks cleared away.

(3) 1st. & 2nd. speed pinions torsionally free from one another - (2 methods) - (a) by screw thread, (b) by flanging.

(4) Splines for 1st. & 2nd. speed pinion reduced on sides to give symmetrical drive to respective pinions.

(5) Plain bearing reverse shaft with integral pinion.

(6) 1st. & 2nd. speed pinion with keys at an angle of 20° to 30°.

So far instructions have not been issued for larger wheels as this upsets gearbox to such an extent that it was thought best to get on with these things causing the least immediate delay and alteration. The sliding of the ball bearing with the reverse shaft does not seem possible as the front end owing to large constant mesh wheel cutting right through the housing.

We are continuing to issue the remainder of instructions in connection with the suggestions in your memos.

A.H.
