I have examined one or two other designs of coupling but their seems nothing better than this Sellers pattern.
I have thought that we need not go to any expense in making it convenient to remove, perhaps if we were to bore a larger cross hole say 3/4" or 1" we could insert a taper wedge or wedges that would drive out the bushes or shafts.

You will see that I do not recommend our drawing in and say as an improvement possible, it seems easy to double the grip from your model.
