re. CRANKSHAFT PERIODS, AND BENTLEY 8.

I have long thought that our damper so lightly set could not help much to damp out periods.

Last year while I was here I suggested a simple pattern of dry centrifugally loaded type which had no bearing to lubricate, because in our earliest examples we could tighten up to great friction without trouble, and I am sure our 30HP. with 1.5 crankshaft and cast iron pistons must have passed the master period. We have this properly designed for J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3., and I hope you will find it better than before.

You must be aware that a new engine with closely fitted bearings, pistons, etc, is not nearly so liable to shew any of the periods badly as one which has been well run in, as at the end of 10,000 miles. The Bentley you tried might be fairly new, but the master period might be much worse at the end of 10,000 hard run miles.
