SECTION 7C41. CROSS STEERING TUBE. N.Sch:3404: Suggestions for improving Steering Lock by reducing the overhang of the Cross Steering Tube Joints. Please receive herewith two blue prints of the following :- G.B.1215: Spring: Steering Joint: 2 off per set: The above piece has been produced to increase the frictional resistance of the ball joints, and so reduce the possibility of slow speed wheel wobble. It should be noted that this spring can be produced by grinding down the standard 20-HP. Production Spring G.55481. to a free length of 4.200". The modified spring will exert a load of 600 lbs. when compressed to 4.000", although, the rate and stress will be slightly modified. We understand that on the 20/25-HP, a load of 10 lbs. at the end of a 10" lever is required on the Cross Steering Tube to overcome the friction on the balls, due to the 600 lbs spring load on each joint of tube: The equivalent load on the Bentley, using a 600 lbs. spring, should be 9 1/4 lbs. With the spring at present used which exerts 480 lbs, the load at the end of a 10" lever should be 7 1/4 lbs. Kindly instruct as required. BY/TWD{T. W. D???Aeith} | ||
