We send herewith LeC. 2082. shewing alterations to 40/50. W. series gearbox to make it suitable for above chassis.
These alterations cover item G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} and part of C. as referred to in our AJS1/M15625. and consists mainly of a new bridge piece carrying the worm wheel inner bearing, which in this case is made from an aluminium bronze die casting instead of steel, allowing of equal expansion and contraction with the gearbox.
You will note this bridge piece has four 5/16 bolts in place of the six 1/4 bolts previously used.
The position of the speedometer drive train of wheels has been slightly altered from W. series, but the wheels themselves and bushes etc are unaltered. The speedometer drive spindle and outside bevel gear unit has been lowered to accommodate the height of gearbox top facing relative to the transmission which has been dropped somewhat.
The outside facing for servo outer bearing housing has been turned through 90°. We cannot find any reason for not doing this, and it has the advantage of keeping the metal thicker at the top.
We expect to send you another drawing on Monday shewing considerably more of the alterations we are effecting, and would point out that we do not wish you to work to the drawing herewith for gearbox cover, owing to our desire to make the hole over which this fits smaller.

AJS.
