The construction and an alternative manufacturing method for 40/50 HP radiator shutters.

We send you herewith drawing No. Lec.1085 showing the 40/50 H.P. Radiator Shutters. The shutters are held in a frame made from one single large pressing which is secured to the radiator by long thin bolts passing through the matrix to clamping plates on the rear. Mr. Royce has already written, and a drawing has been sent in connection with obtaining pressings for the frame, tubes for the shutters and Bakelite strips for the shutter bearings. An alternative method, however, is shewn on Lec.1085 for constructing the shutter tubes from tinned plate folded over and sweated on a metal former. We would draw particular attention to this alternative method of construction as it possesses the great advantage of the inside of the tube at each end being ready tinned, which is much better than having to sand-blast, clean, and tin the inside of a drawn tube at each end to a depth of 1". A special pressing will be required to stop up the ends of the shutter tubes. It is thought that the tubes and pressings are too thin to drill, and that it will therefore be necessary to punch them in a special jig which will correctly locate the holes. The trunnion pins should have their holes jig drilled in the correct position, and after each of the parts have been tinned they may be assembled together by means of the rivets, and then sweated solid.
