1289 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls}5/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 31st August, 1937. W.R. Griswold, Esq., Chief Research Engineer, Packard Motor Car Company, DETROIT. MICHIGAN. Dear Mr. Griswold, We are writing to you as the expert on Hypoid Gears about a matter of lubricants. Owing to the fact that we use bronze plain thrust washers for the differential pinions, and bronze cages in the ring gear thrust bearings, we are troubled with the formation of a copper sulphide sludge when using oils of the "active sulphur" variety. Has anyone in the States yet evolved a suitable lubricant avoiding the use of sulphur ? If you know of one we should be grateful to know from whom we could obtain a sample for test. We still have our '120', and have not yet succeeded in breaking it. Yours sincerely, | ||
