Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Sft.{Mr Swift} o.{Mr Oldham} RP. c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} o.{Mr Oldham} Bys X7360 Sft{Mr Swift}4/BH.30.1.34. PHANTOM II. OIL LEAKS ON FRONT BRAKES. I return memo' Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/KW.20.1.34, in regard to this matter. In order to answer the complaint in question we require to go back some time ago, when we very definitely had troubles of this nature. As a result we reorganized the job so that it should be done by certain careful and expert men. In addition, when the whole Axle was completed, and the Oil Pipes connected, we arranged for one of our Chief Inspectors to make an independent inspection and certify that each Axle was leak-proof. Since we have made the arrangements mentioned, the first complaint we have had is on Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s Chassis. The original complaints of the leaking lower flange were made by the Test Dept. The inspection of this job is part of their special routine for inspection. In view of this, and the subsequent inspection by XP's Dept. we cannot agree that this was a case of bad fitting. We find that during our test of the oiling system under pressure, the surplus oil exudes at the centre of the pivot joints and trickles down the mud shield, and we are wondering if there is a possibility that, with the spinning of the Drums, this oil is taken into the interior, and consequently saturating the brake shoes. We would also like to point out that this Chassis has been in the hands of the Experimental Dept. on several occasions. Sft.{Mr Swift} | ||
