1124 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} ROY{Sir Henry Royce}11/MG24.5.37 CYLINDER CASTINGS EB.2929 Further to ROY{Sir Henry Royce}1/MG3.5.37 to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}, and EY3/G5.5.37 re above, kindly note the Midland Motor Cylinder Company advise they are not in a position to offer Cylinder Castings in any mixture other than their present standard, i.e., CHROMIDIUM - the Brinell for which, according to out tests, approximates 200 to 212, compared with standard castings made in our own Foundry approximating 250. Copy of their letter attached. Figures showing the relative costs of such Castings are set out in ROY{Sir Henry Royce}1/MG3.5.37 to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}, and G/Rb{R. Bowen} confirms that these still hold. Possibly our best policy in the circumstances would be to continue with our own Cylinder Castings until the Experimental Shop have had an opportunity of submitting Cylinders of the Midland Motor Cylinder Company's make to exhaustive mileage and examination. Unless we are advised to the contrary, we shall conclude such suggestion is agreed. I understand E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} is issuing a modified design of cylinder block for the Bentley and 25/30 based on American practice, from the result of which it is quite probable our own foundry may find it possible to reduce their costs.
