"We are duly in receipt of your letter "of the 5th inst., dealing with Cylinder Castings, "and beg to reply as follows.

"We fully discussed this Brinell "question with your Mr. Harvey Bailey when he was over "here early this year, and we explained to him that we "have been using this material ("CHROMIDIUM") giving "this same Brinell figure, for the past eight years, "and to practically the whole of the motor trade it "has given complete satisfaction as a material that "is sufficiently hard and, at the same time, has "reasonable freedom of machining, which you will realise "is a most important consideration to many firms.

"We sincerely regret, after due "consideration to your proposal, that we are not able "to vary our Silicon in any way to accommodate a "Nickel content. Also the practice of incorporating "Nickel in our mixture we feel to be a dangerous one, "as it would be impossible for us to confine this to "Rolls Royce castings only, and we are most anxious "that this alloy should not find its way into other "castings, which might cause us considerable trouble.

"Our Foundry, as you know, is running "on a quantity production basis, and it is not possible "for us to isolate one particular job with its own "special alloy, and keep any sort of control of its "own runners, risers, and general scrap.

"Summarised, we are afraid that we much "regret we can only offer you our standard material "in your Cylinder Castings, and we see no reason why "this should not give you the same satisfaction that "it is giving all our other friends.

We beg to remain,

Yours faithfully,

THE MIDLAND MOTOR CYLINDER CO.LIMITED

Director.
