We think it should be regarded, however, as a simple alternative to the scheme for opening the extra oil valve from the carburation lever, which can be adopted cheaply to English Phantoms already in this country. We believe also it should be tested by Derby with a view to incorporationg it on any complete engines sent to us, since this would be the less expensive way in which English Phantom engines could be made suitable for American conditions of starting.

The disadvantage of this and any other scheme of top-lubrication has been proved to be that if the lubrication is continued for any considerable time, excessive oil smoke is thrown from the exhaust.

We believe, however, that Derby will be interested in trying the scheme out as it is possible that the quantity of oil might be greatly reduced, that it might be more evenly distributed to the cylinders by means of a small distributing pipe carried along the top of the intake manifold and that the tendency to smoke might thus be reduced.

(4) On the whole we are inclined to prefer for our own production the existing form of extra oil controlled both from the carburation lever and from the foot throttle. The carburation control will shortly be installed on MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}-3.

Yours very truly,

Maurice Olley
