To Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} COPY. BY1/P30.9.21. 40/50 CHASSIS - TORQUE TUBE & PROPELLER SHAFT. RE PRESSURE OF PINION BALL THRUST. We have run out the pressure on the ball thrust on various gears at maximum torque - these work out as follows:- Forward 1st. speed. 3725 lbs. 2nd. " 2425 lbs. 3rd. " 1625 lbs. top " 1100 lbs. Reverse 3225 lbs. tending to draw the pinion into mesh. On the over-run on all gears, I am inclined to think that the maximum load to be reckoned for all will be 20% of the figures quoted. This would cover everything except starting up the engine on the gear, which is an exceptional case. Of course, in the case of the reverse, the full load falls on the over-run side of the gear, that is, it tends to pull the bearing tighter into mesh. BY. {R.W.
