Y4429 Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY5-P11.4.23. 20HP SPRINGS. I have just discovered that we have not got a completed standardisation sheet for the use of Firths springs on the 20HP chassis, and as there are certain distinct changes on these springs, both in dimensions and material, I think it is absolutely essential, before any of these springs are fitted to chassis, that we should complete the standardisation sheet. The changes in dimensions are slight ones in regard to thickness of plates, but of course all of Firths springs which you have actually tested have been produced with these slight differences as compared with Messrs. Woodheads, whilst in addition the material is chrome vanadium instead of silicon chrome. Mr Warick informs me that the whole of the standardisation signatures have been obtained with the exception only of CJ's and R's. We think that you should instruct your office to press for CJ's signature, whilst no doubt you yourself can obtain R's written consent to use the springs in the absence of a standardisation sheet with you, but possibly Mr Warick would arrange to send on with this a sheet which Mr Royce would be able to sign. The O.O. are very much upset because I will not permit them to use Firths springs at the moment, but I feel it is better from a point of view of protecting both the Experimental Dept, and the Production Dept, that no move should be made to apply these springs to production chassis until the necessary signatures have been obtained, and I think you will agree that this procedure, under the circumstances, is the correct one.
