To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from CJ.

CJ2/E2/2/23

There is to be placed on the market a new inner tube for pneumatic tyres which is claimed as practically immune from puncture.

The inner tube is, it is said, 7 lbs. greater in weight than the ordinary tube.

Therefore, if a spare wheel is carried, there would be an additional weight to the car of 35 lbs. and an additional weight on each axle of 14 lbs.

Supposing that our customers became clamorous to have these tubes fitted, what would be the technical objections?

It is said that at the point where the tyre is in contact with the ground, the width of tyre touching the earth is less than with the ordinary inner tube.

It is said to give an improvement in petrol consumption of 12½%, to give extra speed, to eliminate body rattles, but these are maker's statements.

This memorandum is simply on the question of weight.
