Dear Sirs,

We have recently noticed that certain batches of "L" section rings E.61125 have been supplied by you on which the working face has been lapped after cutting away the portion which forms the "L" shape of the ring.

This procedure is quite wrong as irrespective of what type of finish is given to the working face the forming of the "L" section must definitely be the last operation, there is a note on our drawing to this effect. As far as we can trace the rings have been supplied since last December, prior to that date all rings had a ground finish on the periphery and were not lapped.

To attempt to correct the periphery after forming the special shape destroys the effectiveness of the ring, and consequently gives rise to excessive oil consumption. We should be pleased, therefore, if you could state whether the lapping process was undertaken on your own initiative or whether it was authorised from these works. If it is a case of the former we are afraid we shall have to return the faulty rings for replacement by you.

We should be pleased if you could give this matter your earliest attention as we are now held up on production pending a decision.

Yours faithfully,

for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
