Absorption. A sample was weighed, soaked in water for 100 hours and re-weighed. The increase in weight (of the varnish alone) was 24.5%. The varnish was left permanently lighter in colour.

Solubility. The varnish was not visibly affected by 48 hours immersion in engine-oil, or by 24 hours in petrol.

Chemical Stability. Pink stains were made by drops of strong sulphuric acid and brown stains by nitric acid when left for some minutes; but no violent actions occurred.
