163 December 23rd.1937. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/AP. Paul Dykes Esq., The Loke House, West Road, CAMBRIDGE. Dear Paul, Many thanks for your letter. I am afraid we shall be away for Christmas, if, however, you come to this part of the world it will be quite in order for you to leave the acceler-ometer with the gateman at the front door. I will warn them it is to be kept upright and not touched by anybody. With regard to your car, the noise like a siren when you start the engine in the morning is made by the oil pump relief valve and does not matter at all. If you used thinner oil it probably would not happen. If the ride control does nothing at all, either there is no oil in the little square box on the right-hand side of the gearbox, or there is a pipe line broken, or there is dirt under the valve in the aforesaid square box. If you take this to pieces, remember that the minutest particle of dirt under any of the valves will stop it working. As regards the servo on your Father's car, he should be exceedingly grateful that his brakes are better than everyone else's. If you insist, however, I will send you another pair of servo linings and the chances are that these will be less power-ful. You will be able to spend a happy six hours removing split pins and replaceing them, and probably dropping half a dozen washers into the gearbox when trying to fit the new linings. Happy Christmas, Yours sincerely, | ||
