To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth} c. to HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} [text is struck through] 300a [handwritten] HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/VS.{J. Vickers}3.6.37. 35.EX CHASSIS - NO. 9 UNIT. Strip Report After 21,500 Miles in France. All parts have completed the above mileage unless otherwise stated. Crankcase and Bearings LOP.E.87328. Nos. 2 and 3 intermediate bearings in standard W/MT., the remainder in Hoyts Z.3. material. R.R.56 Liners. Considering the mileage these bearings had done, their condition was very good, with the exception of No. 3 (in W/MT.) and No. 6 (in Hoyts Z.3.), from which a quantity of metal had broken away. There was little to choose between the condition of the two materials, there only being two bearings in W/MT, but the average wear, both in the bearings and on the crankshaft, appeared to be greater in the W/MT. bearings than in the Hoyts. The shims in R.R.56. were all in good condition and had not worn. Herewith Ex.I.171 giving all particulars. Connecting Rods LOP.E.84691. Panel Milled. Despatched 5. 4. 37., mileage 9,500. These were crack-tested and found to be free from cracks. Big-End Bearings in Standard R.R. W/MT. These were in very poor condition, in spite of the fact that they had only done 9,500 miles. All bearings had metal broken away on the inside bore, but were in quite good condition as regards the plain-rod bearings. Charted measurements herewith - Ex.I.174. continued. | ||
