CAR HEATER ON Wraith, B.III, & B.50.
Chassis.

Referring to G/Rb.{R. Bowen}18/A/142/W.18.11.38. and G/Rb.{R. Bowen}4/A/48A/W.8.12.38., we entirely agree that the present fittings used when a car heater is fitted to a chassis, are unnecessarily expensive.

With a view to effecting an economy in this direction, we have had scheme SCD.737 (print herewith) drawn and have fitted up this scheme on several experimental cars including the last B.III car to complete 15,000 miles (8.B.V.). With this scheme it is intended that the only parts used shall be a Rotherham Tap No.71A an adapter for same (EXC.886) a curved pipe for same (EXC.884) and an adapter for the water pump (EXC.885) and sufficient hose to connect the heater to these connections. Other than EXC.884, no cooper pipe should be used and the hose used should be our standard Leyland & Birmingham quality (S.633K/YS13) in ½ bore size.

This scheme has proved satisfactory and completed 15,000 miles satisfactorily on 8.B.V. car - we consider therefore that it could be adopted immediately on chassis being fitted with car heaters, and would like G/Rb.{R. Bowen} to supply comparative cost figures and By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} to instruct accordingly.

With this scheme it is possible to shut off the water supply to the heater, but not to isolate the heater entirely in case of a hose failure - we do not however consider this necessary, and we have never had occasion to wish to isolate the heater.
